Memorial Program Update

By David W. Taylor; October 8, 2015

The Americal Legacy Foundation is making strides in perpetuating the memory of this unique and historic Army division.

On September 14, 2012 a fitting monument to veterans of the Americal Division was dedicated

along the Walk of Honor at the National Infantry Museum, just outside Fort Benning (Columbus, Georgia). The dedication ceremony was an part of the of the ADVA national reunion held in Atlanta.

In March 2015 we dedicated a monument in Cebu, the Philippines, at the exact site where the Japanese Army surrendered to the Americal Division. Several Americal Division veterans and decendents of WWII veterans attended the dedication ceremony along a rural road several miles from Cebu City.

A major monument is planned at Fort Sill, Oklahoma to honor the Artillery units which supported the Americal in its three periods of activation: World War II, the Cold War and Vietnam. Its dedication is expected in late 2016.

A monument is being considered for placement at Fort Sam Houston, Texas to honor the medics, doctors and nurses who supported the Americal in World War II, the Cold War and Vietnam. Monuments at national cemeteries are also receiving consideration and will be evaluated on a location by location basis.

Each Americal monument is designed to tell a story and visitors will learn much about the division’s heritage.

A pictorial history of the Americal division will be published in the next several years along with historical monographs, a virtual reference library, etc. Keep our website on your list of favorites to keep current with our historical projects. A publication on the history of the fighting on Cebu is planned for release in early 2016.
