I woke up in the Chu Lai hospital on October 8, 1971 and their was a guy across from me who lost both legs and an arm. Looking for: Information about my Vietnam unit. I was a lieutenant in the Americal Division Finance Office from 1 July 1968 to June 30,1969. Do you know how I get a roster of the men whose were in that unit? Contact: Denver Dudley; denver.dudley@icloud.com
[Additional information provided by Les Hines, ADVA Vietnam Historian: You would have been assigned to the 23rd Administration Company within the “Finance Section”. The 23rd Administration Company consisted 800 men assigned to the following sections: Staff Judge Advocate, Inspector General, Division Chaplain, Adjutant General, Special Services, Information, and the Finance Section. When I worked on locating men from my battalion, I used old orders that I had brought back from Vietnam with me. Then I obtained more orders from the contacts that I had made. This eventually expanded out to over 200 men. You may need to do something faster as we are all up in our 70s by now. One way would be to contact the Personnel Center in St. Louis and request a morning report for the 23rd Administration Company (maybe they could provide it by section?). Many individuals have told me that it is better to contract a private company to work requests for morning reports rather than trying to deal directly with the Personnel Center in St. Louis. You need to provide dates that you would be interested in. You may end up paying a lot if you request morning reports for every day that you served. And that is a lot of material that would have a lot of redundancy and might be more than you wanted to work through. Perhaps you could ask for a report for one date within each of the 12 months, or one for every 6 months, or a number that you are comfortable with. If your only interest is the Finance Section, perhaps they request can be made only for the Finance Section. If not perhaps you might only be interested in names of people that you knew or could select the personnel from the Finance related MOS codes.]

Looking for: Witnesses to a helicopter crash in Vietnam on August 08, 1967. My husband was with the Americal Division in Vietnam in 1967. At the time he was a Captain with the Army in Chu Lai. His name Captain Vivian(VJ) Villarreal with Americal Division Artillery Headquarters. Sadly my husband passed away. While in Vietnam he was injured in a helicopter crash on August 08,1967 in the Chu Lai area, chopper crashed as a result of escorting a convoy and taking fire, chopper went down in the China Sea. Luckily some Marines saw the chopper go down and rescued my husband, the pilot and another person before they drowned. They were taken to the nearest medical field hospital (1st Marine hospital ) in Chu Lai. My husband had broken ribs, cuts and lacerations but was released the next day and went up again on another chopper. Unfortunately the Commander in charge, Col. Young did not report his injuries into his record and was never awarded a Purple Heart. My husband a very humble man never thought of correcting his record by pursuing the award. My husband continued his career and in 1988 retired as a LTC with 26 yrs. In service. Now that he has passed I want to pursue the inquiry into getting him awarded the Purple Heart for our kids and Grandchildren. I think he earned the award as a result of his injuries.
